Gopher Spot Goes Green

Local and organic foods go hand in hand. The Gopher Spot has a wide selection of both!

Organic Food

USDA Organic

Organic foods are grown without the use of conventional pesticides or growth hormones, raised without the routine use of antibiotics, and processed without ionizing radiation or food additives.

Benefits

  • It takes, on average, 30% less energy to grow organic food.
  • Organic foods are healthier, contain more nutrients, and have less pesticide residue.
  • Organic farming produces healthier soil and less runoff than conventional farming.
  • Organic farmers are able to earn a living without government subsidies paid by taxpayers.

Local Foods

Although the definitions vary, local foods are generally grown or produced within a close geographic range of where they are consumed. This area is sometimes called a foodshed.

Benefits

  • Since it does not have far to travel, local food has less of an opportunity to wilt, rot, and lose nutrients.
  • Buying locally supports the local and regional economies, as well as small farmers.
  • Local foods require less fossil fuel and packaging materials.

Choosing from our great selection of products at the Gopher Spot isn't the only way to support local farmers. Check out a farmer's market near you!
