SunBowl Rules
Tournament Schedule
- SunBowl Tournament play begins Monday February 2nd and ends Friday March 6th, 2009.
- You may enter the tournament anytime bowling lanes are available at either one of our two Gameroom locations; the Gopher Spot (basement of the St. Paul Student Center) or Goldy's Gameroom (basement of Coffman Union).

- The SunBowl Awards Ceremony and drawing for the Grand Prizes will be held at Noon on Tuesday March 10th at the Gopher Spot in the St. Paul Student Center. Your presence is highly appreciated and recommended. Many fabulous door prizes are awarded; however, you do not need to be present to win the Grand Prize drawings.
Eligibility
- Current U of M students, faculty, and staff members
- Retired U of M faculty and staff members
U of M ID will be accepted as proof of student, faculty, or staff status in order to enter the tournament. Status will be verified with current U of M records before any prizes are awarded.
Student Unions & Activities full-time employees, their families, and Gameroom student employees are not eligible for Grand Prizes.
Tournament Entry
The $10 entry fee entitles each participant to:
- 3 Games of "no-tap" bowling and shoe rental, if needed.
- Entry in the drawings for the Grand Prizes - these are awarded regardless of score!
- 1st - 20th place prizes and t-shirts, based on highest overall final scores with handicap.
- Great door prizes for those who attend the Awards Ceremony.
There is a maximum of 5 tournament entries per person.
Tournament Play
- Tournament play is bowled league style; bowlers alternate frames across a pair of lanes.
- The full name of each bowler must be entered into the bowling computer.
- Any needed score corrections will be verified and made by the Gameroom Attendant at the bowling desk.
- Five minutes of practice balls may be thrown on the pair of lanes.
- Best 2 out of 3 games. At least 2 complete games must be bowled for entry into the grand prize drawing.
Tournament Scoring
- Tournament is "no-tap"format.
- 9 or 10 pins on the first ball count as a strike
- A split on the first ball is awarded an automatic spare
- Your final score is the total of your best 2 games out of 3, added your 2 game tournament handicap (if applicable).
- You must have a verified league average of 6 or more games within the last calendar year to have a tournament handicap.
- Handicap will be determined as follows:
- Average = highest verified league average (based on 6 or more games) as of the date you first enter the SunBowl tournament is used to calculate all subsequent entries.
- Last year's average will be used if your current 08-09 season average is more than 10 pins lower than last year's average.
- All averages will be verified. The decision of the SUA Gamerooms' Manager will be final.
- Scratch is 190.
- Handicap = 90% of the difference between your average and scratch.
- Maximum 2 game total handicap is 200 pins.
- If no verified average is available, bowler competes without handicap.
- In the event of any ties, drawings will be conducted to determine final score placements.
